We do pipe freezing on the Sunshine Coast and across Moreton Bay. It’s a drive up from Currumbin Waters rather than a flight, which changes what’s worth coming out for. The line stays full and under pressure while a frozen plug inside it does the work of a valve you haven’t got.
Tell us the pipe size, the material and what the line is carrying on 1800 468 827, and you’ll get an answer on whether it can be frozen.
Yes, and by road. Currumbin Waters is our Queensland depot and the run north is a couple of hours, so the whole coast and Moreton Bay are inside driving range and you’re not paying for anybody’s airfare. Bayswater in Victoria is the second depot.
Usually chilled water in hospital and accommodation plant, potable mains for the water authority, and process and cooling water at the food plants, and the calls come from hospital and resort engineering staff, water authority crews and mechanical contractors.
Most of the accommodation and hospital work up here’s in buildings that are full every day of the year, so the shutdown window people ask about usually doesn’t exist.
Moreton Bay and the coast north of Brisbane are the same run for us, so one job is enough to bring us out rather than waiting for a second. Behind the freeze there’s usually a valve going in, a length of pipe coming out, equipment being isolated, a branch terminated, a line diverted or one abandoned altogether.
Not on every job. Freezing earns its place on pipe you can’t weld, in positions with no clearance for a fitting, and on work short enough that leaving hardware behind makes no sense. Outside that, holding it back mechanically with a stop is often cheaper and we’ll say so. A valve fitted into the live main is what you want if the isolation point has to be there permanently. And a freeze blocks a line rather than opening one, so a new branch is a hot tapped connection. All of them sit together on our page on choosing a method.
The other job that most often turns up in the same scope is hot tapping on the Sunshine Coast.
There’s no drilling and the pipe never gets opened. We run liquid nitrogen around the outside of a short length until the product sitting inside it gives up enough heat to go solid. That solid section will hold against very high differential pressures. When the job is over it thaws out and the line is exactly as it was, and there’s nothing to unbolt because nothing went on.
What it does need is still product. Anything that’s still moving keeps carrying heat back into the section we’re trying to chill, so we’ll ask early whether the flow can be stopped. The main pipe freezing page carries the full detail on materials, contents and applications.
The alternative is emptying the system, and that bill is bigger than it looks. There’s a venting procedure to arrange, the fluid needs somewhere to go, and the treated water and system inhibitors don’t come back. Product that’s contaminated or volatile makes the argument stronger again, because none of it has to be handled.
The pipe can be carbon steel, stainless, Kunifer, aluminium alloys, nickel alloy, copper based alloys, ductile iron or cast iron. What it carries can be water, coolants, oils, acids, alcohols, paints, liquid food product, various chemicals or sewage.
Everything hinges on the contents, because if they won’t freeze there’s no plug. Once we know that, these fill in the rest:
Ring 1800 468 827, or put the detail in an email to [email protected]. If you’re not sure whether freezing suits your line, just give us a call, we’ll ask a few questions and let you know.
Freezing is one line on a longer list. We also do hot taps into pressurised lines, valves inserted while the main runs, leaks sealed without a shutdown, thermowells and instrument pockets and pressure testing and purging. Because we drive rather than fly, adding a second job to a the Sunshine Coast visit costs very little. Coverage is on where we work.
