Line Stopping Brisbane

We do line stopping work in Brisbane and south east Queensland. A stop goes into the live line through a fitting, holds the flow back while the work happens, then comes out again and the line goes straight back into service.

Call 1800 468 827 with your pipe size, material and what’s in the line, and we’ll tell you whether a stop suits the job.

How far do you travel for a Brisbane job?

Our Queensland depot is at Currumbin Waters on the Gold Coast, roughly an hour from the Brisbane CBD and less again once you’re north of the river. A line stop in Brisbane is a normal day’s work for us, not a special trip.

We have clients in every state and territory, plus the Pacific Islands and New Zealand, and we fly in and out for the ones further afield.

What methods do you use?

Rubber stops and live bag insertions through a hot tap fitting. Squash offs, with or without an encasement. And the EZ2 system, which has largely replaced the older stop-and-drain-down approach on water mains.

Flow can be held back on most services, not just water. There’s more detail on the main line stopping page, and a side-by-side of every isolation method on which method do I need.

Approvals in Queensland

Live gas work needs sign-off from the state’s own regulator, worked through job by job, and that approval is usually what sets the programme rather than the stop itself. We’ve held gas hot-tap and stop-off accreditation since 1998, when Australian Hot Taps became the first company the Victorian regulator approved for it. Ask early if a Queensland gas job is on the cards. The lead time is the part worth planning around.

What the work looks like in Brisbane

Most Brisbane line stop enquiries come from civil contractors and water authorities part-way through a job: a valve needs replacing, a new main has to tie in, or a section of an old one has to come out, and draining the network isn’t an option. Holding the flow back with a stop lets that happen without shutting a suburb’s water off.

The kind of job we get asked about here

A recent one was a DN450 ductile iron main on Bribie Island Road in Caboolture, on Brisbane’s northern edge. Two line stops isolated a section of the main, the old pipe came out dry between them, and new spool pieces went in and were tied in live at 500 kPa. The network never came off supply.

What helps us quote it

How long the isolation has to hold, and what’s downstream of it, move a line stop price most. The rest helps:

  • Pipe size and material
  • What’s in the line, and at what pressure
  • Whether you need a temporary stop or a permanent valve
  • Where in Brisbane or south east Queensland the site is
  • Anything else on site worth doing on the same visit
  • Any drawings or photos

Call 1800 468 827 or email [email protected]. If you’re not sure whether a stop suits your line, just give us a call, we’ll ask a few questions and let you know.

Other live pipeline work in Queensland

We travel for the rest of it too: hot tapping, pipe freezing, live valve insertion, live gas diversions, leak repair under pressure, thermowell installation and testing and purging. If a Brisbane job needs more than one, it’s usually cheaper on one visit. See also where we work.

Where the main can’t take a stop, pipe freezing on a Brisbane line is the other way to get an isolation.
